The shelling stops. It is morning. The land is black. Smoke drifts, out of the ground. The forest has gone. There is one tree. The soldier watches a bird. He follows its flight, In the sky. He closes his eyes. He turns his face, To the sun. The wind moves, the branches, in the burnt tree. There are no leaves.
